[Community_garden] Fruit trees in right of ways

Hello fellow community gardeners and friends,

There is a lot of interest in fruit trees being planted in public places in
our city of Portland, Oregon. In the past, fruit trees have been only
planted in or near our community gardens. It was understood that our
Portland Community Gardens program would be responsible for them at those
sites. We teach fruit tree care and have free classes for the public and the
gardeners.

Members of our City of Portland and Multnomah County Food Policy Council are
wanting to recommend the planting of fruit trees in other public spaces,
primarily in the parking strip right of way areas. This would be included in
the adoption of the Urban Forestry Plan at City Council.

Do other cities have plans, code or provisions for fruit trees on public
property and the right of ways, such as parking strips? I would love to have
a few examples to share with the Food Policy Council.

Thank you so much for your time in answering this question. I know that we
are all extremely busy at this time of year.
