HI Sarah,
We are also planning our first open house at our fledgling project on a
vacant lot here in Albuquerque. Our plan for volunteer recognition
involves soliciting local establishments (mostly restaurants and cafes)
to give away some gift certificates with theme of "keeping it local" -
locally grown food, local businesses, local folk. Other than that, its
mostly about mentioning people by name at the event and that goes a
long way.
We are keeping this event simple - just a pot luck to turn out more
local folks to see what we are doing and how they can get involved. We
thought about live music, but decided not to because of the permitting
hassles it creates (and not enough lead time). We plan to do that for
the harvest event, though. We hold a number of other larger events in
the fall as well (not related to the garden, but with the same
community) where we have a parade, music, jumpers, food, arts and
crafts and itinerant artists (poets, circus arts, etc.). What you have
planned sounds great and I wouldn't add anything. You might use it to
advertise other educational events you may be having in the near
future, though. In my experience, mostly people just want to get
together to socialize at events like this and so long as you provide
some essential like food (very important), they will stay, socialize,
and learn about the project.
Good luck - I love the UP!
Wade
