[Community_garden] garden allotment size question

On the way home from the ACGA conference and board meeting in Boston last 
week, I saw a newspaper article about allotments in the UK and it mentioned 
that the standard size of 30x100 feet for allotments was determined a long 
time ago as the amount required to feed a family of four. (Apparently demand 
is so high that they're having in some areas to reduce allotment size below 
the 'standard.' but that standard sounds awfully generous anyway, doesn't 
it??)
