[Community_garden] garden allotment size question

Kristin,
When I went to the International Community Gardening Conference and toured Europe's largest allotment site in Nottingham in 1999, I came away with the distinct impression that allotments were being abandoned rapidly across the UK. That was certainly the case in Nottingham. Has that changed or is the desire to have an allotment (like community gardens in the US) based on demographics particular to specific communities so that in some communities allotments are being abandoned while in others it there is more demand than plots?

Some other reasons for breaking allotments into smaller units (creating something we would recognize as a community garden site in the UK), besides just high demand are because families are smaller and workers are more transient and working longer hours.

On the way home from the ACGA conference and board meeting in Boston last
week, I saw a newspaper article about allotments in the UK and it mentioned
that the standard size of 30x100 feet for allotments was determined a long
time ago as the amount required to feed a family of four. (Apparently demand
is so high that they're having in some areas to reduce allotment size below
the 'standard.' but that standard sounds awfully generous anyway, doesn't
it??)
