Job Description
PROGRAM DIRECTOR, WASHINGTON YOUTH GARDEN
FRIENDS OF THE NATIONAL ARBORETUM
Description of Position and Organization
This is a full-time position reporting directly to the Executive Director of the Friends of the National Arboretum (FONA). The Washington Youth Garden (WYG) uses the garden cycle as a tool to inspire children and families to engage in self-discovery, explore relationships with food and the natural world, and contribute to the health and well-being of their communities. Beginning in the winter with in-school classes and continuing through the growing season, families grow fruits and vegetables together in an organic garden on the grounds of the USNA culminating in a fall harvest celebration. The families involved work together for their own crops and also donate surplus to others in the community through DC Central Kitchen.
WYG has been a project of the Friends of the National Arboretum (FONA) since 1995. FONA is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization located at the U.S. National Arboretum, 3501 New York Avenue NE, Washington, D.C. FONA is dedicated to enhancing, through private and public sector resources, support for the educational and research programs and public display gardens of the U.S. National Arboretum (USNA).
Job Responsibilities
The Program Director (PD) is responsible for the management and oversight of the educational programs and finances of the WYG. Responsibilities include:
Ø Oversee the following components of the program:
· Garden Science, SPROUT, Growing Food
Growing Together and Seed to Supper
· Educator workshops
· Special programs
Ø Supervise staff of two full time employees; a Garden Coordinator and an Education Coordinator and seasonal intern(s).
Ø Coordinate with Education Coordinator and Garden Coordinator to develop and evaluate WYG programs.
Ø Manage the financial administration of the WYG. This includes developing and updating the budget on an ongoing basis and ensuring adequate in-coming resources to run the programs and meet all budgetary needs.
Ø Track and acknowledge WYG contributions through donor database.
Ø Maintain WYG check requests, bank account and other financial records.
Ø Develop new and creative community outreach programs and special events to bring the community as well as potential donors into the youth garden

Ø Coordinate with FONA Executive Director to cultivate and broaden foundation, corporate and individual donor base through grant writing appeals and membership drives. The PD must work closely with key stakeholders, including the U.S. National Arboretum, National Capital Area Garden Clubs, Slow Food D.C., private foundations, donors and other partners. (S)he must be comfortable working with diverse populations and community members.
Ø Coordinate with FONA Membership Director to develop a membership program tailored to increasing WYG donors.
Ø Manage WYG publications including brochures, list-serve, newsletter, and website.
Ø Update WYG Web site monthly updates.
Ø Make presentations to FONA board and community-based organizations.
Qualifications
The Program Director must have at least three years management experience preferably with a non profit organization. The PD will need to have excellent communication, computer and time management skills. Grant writing ability is required. General knowledge of organic gardening or agricultural production is highly desirable. A BA/BS in Non-Profit Management would be an additional asset.
