Community Garden plots available

>From Staff Reports

It’s time to sign up for a garden plot at the Coppell
Community Garden. This is a great way for family,
friends or organizations to contribute to the
community. Through growing produce for the Metrocrest
Social Services food pantry, gardeners have the
opportunity to learn more about growing organic
vegetables in this community effort.

Gardening is also a great stress reliever, exercise
and can be done at any age. Gardeners are provided
with a 70 to 100-square-foot raised bed where it
typically takes about one to two hours a week to grow
wholesome fruits and vegetables.

The annual Adopt-a-Plot sign-up will be held at the
Healthy Living Fair from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 20 at Town
Center, 255 Parkway Blvd.

The Coppell Community Garden is a nonprofit
organization that provides donation gardens,
contributing more than 10,000 pounds of fresh produce
yearly to Metrocrest Social Services since 1998. Each
Saturday, the harvest is picked up by the agency and
is available to their clients in the food pantry. The
gardens are also demonstration sites for public
education on composting with the city of Coppell's
Master Composters. Church, scout and school youth
continue to provide many hours of community service by
planting, mulching and building at the gardens.

The organization has garden plots available at the
Helping Hands Garden, 255 Parkway Blvd., and Ground
Delivery Garden, 450 S. Denton Tap. For information,
call Coppell Community Programs at 972-462-5191.
