All are invited to garden at rented arboretum plots

AREA -- Community gardening plots are being made
available for rent at the Wagner Farm Arboretum, 197
Mountain Ave., Warren.

Five miles west of Berkeley Heights, sited in full
sun and surrounded by deer fence, the plots measure 10
feet by 20 feet. They may be used for either seasonal
or perennial plantings, and the annual fee is $50.

Berkeley Heights resident Keith Cooper, chairman of
the Community Garden Committee at the arboretum,
reported that Master Gardeners from Union and Somerset
counties, as well as members of the Gardeners of
Watchung Hills, will be cultivating plots in the
community gardens.

"They will be ready to assist gardeners wanting
productive and attractive gardens there," said Mr.
Cooper, who noted his home gardens have been "eaten
down and shaded out." He recommended signing up early
to receive registration materials for the 2007, and
may be contacted at 908-322-8323.

Weather permitting, the garden area will be ready for
planting by late April.

"Now is a good time for cruising the seed
catalogues," Mr. Cooper said. The plots are to be
tended using organic gardening methods. Guidelines for
using these soil-enhancing techniques and materials
will be provided to registrants.
