POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
DIRECTOR OF BROOKLYN GREENBRIDGE
Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn, NY
(Community Horticulture)
Reports to: Vice President of Education
Position Overview:
The Director of Brooklyn GreenBridge oversees BBG's community
horticulture program, which includes the Urban Composting Project,
Registered Community Garden Program, greening projects with community
groups, Horticultural Therapy components and Greenest Block in Brooklyn
Contest. The Director is part of a team that works closely with other
staff of the Education Department, other departments and volunteers.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
* Develop overall strategy for Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) in
its horticultural outreach to the community; set goals and conduct
regular evaluation of programs
* Oversee staffing needs and supervise staff of program
* Manage program budget and assist fundraising staff in preparing
proposals as needed; oversight of the implementation of publicly and
privately funded initiatives
* Manage volunteer components, including the Master Composter
program
* Coordinate linkages with other NYC and national greening
organizations; develop partnerships where appropriate
* Work with Manager of Community Horticulture to maintain and
sustain core GreenBridge programs, including Greenest Block in Brooklyn
Contest; Registered Community Gardens; Sustainable Garden Project;
Brooklyn Gardener Newsletter; Horticultural Therapy and annual Making
Brooklyn Bloom event for the public
* Create and sustain communication mechanisms among key
constituencies, including community gardeners, block associations, and
general public requesting information on GreenBridge programs
* Provide reports for Trustees, city agencies and other
departments within BBG
* Oversee GreenBridge database to ensure that records are current
and statistics are easily accessible for BBG reports
* Design and teach GreenBridge workshops at BBG and in the
community
* Represent BBG's community horticulture program to selected
community groups, Borough President's office, civic associations; write
articles and give public presentations as needed at BBG and to outside
groups
* Perform any departmental or related duties or special projects
as directed
Qualification:
* Master's degree in education, horticulture or related field, or
equivalent and a minimum of five years in a supervisory role
* Candidate must be enthusiastic about urban greening
* Capable of being a team member as well as a person with vision
and creativity to lead
* Must be passionate about working with a diverse audience,
personable, and able to interact well with community, staff and
volunteers
* Self starter, detail oriented, and able to manage work on
multiple projects effectively and efficiently
* Possess proven skills in budgetary and fiscal management, and
working knowledge of technology used for program needs
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential
* Evening and weekend work is required. Valid drivers' license
required
