Garden Education Internship Opportunity!
The Washington Youth Garden (WYG) at the U.S. National Arboretum is
looking for an energetic individual to assist WYG staff with providing a
highly interactive, hands-on horticultural, environmental and culinary
education program for elementary school students in Washington, D.C.
Mission
Using the garden cycle as a tool, the mission of the Washington Youth
Garden at the U.S. National Arboretum is to inspire children and
families to engage in self-discovery, explore relationships with food
and the natural world, and contribute to the health and well-being of
their communities.
Program Description
The Washington Youth Garden, a project of the Friends of the National
Arboretum (FONA), is comprised of an in-school Garden Science program
and two outdoor garden programs, Growing Food...Growing Together and
Seed to Supper, both located on the grounds of the U.S. National
Arboretum (USNA). During the winter months, children receive weekly
instruction through a highly interactive, hands-on program that
introduces plant and environmental sciences, food, and nutrition.
During the spring and summer, the children and their families learn to
grow and prepare their own food by tending their very own garden plots
and a variety of communal areas. In addition to learning to grow their
own food, youth gardeners participate in a variety of field trips,
creative arts activities, environmental science lessons, cooking
classes, and special garden events.
Responsibilities
The Garden Education Intern is responsible for assisting with the
development and facilitation of educational programs that use
cooperative learning techniques for the Washington Youth Garden's two
summer programs. The intern is also expected to learn general organic
gardening techniques and assist with the maintenance of the garden and
greenhouse. An approved project regarding some aspect of the program
must be developed and presented by the intern during the course of the
summer. The intern will also attend weekly supervisory and program
planning meetings. The intern works closely with WYG, FONA, and USNA
staff, volunteers, parents and children.
Qualifications
Applicants must be working toward a degree in Environmental Studies,
Biology, Education or another related field. The student must be
returning to college in the fall as a full time student. General
knowledge and interest in vegetable gardening and food, ability to work
well with children, good communication skills, creativity, willingness
and enthusiasm to learn about the youth gardening movement and help
children master basic gardening skills are expected. Musical,
theatrical, and arts and crafts experience is helpful. First Aid/CPR
certification a plus. Must be able to work outdoors in various weather
conditions and lift 50 lbs.
Time Commitment
35 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday. Mid-June through mid-
August 2007. Eight weeks minimum.
Compensation
$2,000 stipend sponsored by Exxon Mobil Community Summer Jobs Program.
Salary is subject to FICA and income taxes. Note: Depending on WYG
funding, the CSJP internship stipend may be supplemented.
