The key is not to seal the box, per say, because you still want  
drainage.  I've had success with landscaping fabric, the stuff you  
use as weed blockers under mulched beds.  That lets the water through  
but keeps the soil in the box.  Depending on the amount of soil and  
the the size of the box, it might need to be reinforced with wood  
cross beams or metal mesh.
