As Part of the San Bernardino United Human Family Cooperative Garden
Opening & Health Fair on June 30, 2007, Q2 will open to the public
for the first time, inviting visitors to "clone-your-own" fresh
fruits and vegetables. Based on the 18th century Royal Botanical
Gardens at Kew, where the English collected plants from colonized
lands for use by the elite in the empire, this project reverses the
exploitation by sharing food plants developed by large corporations
with those in less privileged circumstances. The process begins by
collecting supermarket “Flora” from various locations, then
through specialized propagation technologies, the plant tissue is
replicated in the geodesic-dome/lab/greenhouse. The new food plants,
fruits and vegetables harvested are then distributed to residents in
the community.

Vandana Shiva's writing influences the concept behind Q2. She states
in, Protect or Plunder: Understanding Intellectual Property Rights,
“Patents on life amount to claiming the role of Creator or God. One
entity cannot claim the creation-right to living organisms without
taking this role. The holders of such patents set out to prove that
they have developed a “new” life, opening up the floodgates of
patenting life forms.” Perceived ownership of living organisms has
led to the patenting of seeds and tissue, further taking what was
accessible to all and controlling it through private entities for
commercial gain. Q2 questions the ethics of such practices.

Lisa Tucker and Ron Chiarello began Q2 in the virtual world of
LambdaMOO, later relocating their collaboration to the Anne E.
Shirrells Park Community Garden in San Bernardino. Dr. Chiarello
teaches chemistry at CSU, East Bay and has spent the majority of his
career in the biotechnology industry. Lisa Tucker is an
interdisciplinary artist and researcher, currently working in the
area of eco and biotech art through a socially engaged practice. The
events have been organized in cooperation with the City of San
Bernardino, New Hope Missionary Church, San Bernardino Community
Development Corporation, Rio Vista Elementary School, Operation
Phoenix, United Human Family Network and "Bioneering: Hybrid
Investigations of Food" (www.foodbioneers.com). Q2 is generously
supported by the University of California Institute for Research in
the Arts, University of California Digital Arts Network, and the
University of California, Irvine, Claire Trevor School of the Arts.
