National Hunger Awareness Day

Last week the Senate passed S. Res 186, a resolution that designates June 5,
2007, as "National Hunger Awareness Day''.  The resolution also allows Sens
Gordon H. Smith (R-OR), Blanche L. Lincoln (D-AR), Elizabeth Dole (R-NC),
and Richard J. Durbin (D-IL) to collect food donations at their Capitol Hill
offices from May 7 to June 5 to aid families suffering from hunger and food
insecurity in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

The resolution calls on the people of the United States to observe National
Hunger Awareness Day with appropriate ceremonies, volunteer activities, and
other local anti-hunger advocacy efforts and hunger relief charities,
including food banks, food rescue organizations, food pantries, soup
kitchens, and emergency shelters; and by continuing to support programs and
public policies that reduce hunger and food insecurity in the United States.
