Like many others I was saddened to hear of the passing of Adam Honigman. Rest in Peace. Adam was a wonderful source of encouragement at the darkest time for our community garden. He was a model of attitude and perserverance. Like our gardener in Phoenix things have gotten very serious with lawyers. If it was just community gardening life would be wonderful, but most of our time is spent making presentations at zoning by-law meetings, appealing hearings of the board of adjustment, writing to politicians who don't write back, going to meetings, meetings, meetings, suffering personality assination, it just seems to go on forever. Adam understood all of that and with a sense of humor that helped to relieve the burdens that come with community gardening in a world that does not value gardens. He will be greviously missed. Hi, I'm working on setting up a Community Garden with a group that will be
purchasing its land upfront in St Petersburg, FL.
At present, the city's zoning does not permit non-profits or any kind of
group to operate in areas deemed residential. They are interested in
amending their code to add a new category for community gardens in order to
let us implement our garden and to allow others to do the same. Staff at
the codes department have asked us to submit examples of zoning regulations
for community gardens from other cities. They want templates for guidelines
on things like standards for hours of operation, lighting, fencing, public
access, parking, etc.
Does anyone on this list know of a city with good zoning or other municipal
regulations for community gardens? Having some suggestions of where to
start researching would be extremely helpful.
Thanks in advance,
Andrea Hildebran

Since your garden will be purchased outright, my suggestion would be to
start by researching cities which
permit or zone for urban agriculture. Another suggestion would be to check
the zoning for gardens held
in some of the Trusts for Public Lands. If non-profits are not allowed in
residential areas in St. Pete,
the urban agriculture approach may prove to be best.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Adam's death. I never knew the man but
for some years I have enjoyed his poetic and learned offerings to the list.
He has been an inspiration to community gardeners everywhere and I always
thought I might get to visit "his" garden in New York. It didn't sound like
he had an easy life but that didn't prevent him from sharing his passion for
community gardens and his support for the forgotten. I will also miss him.

Dear all,
It is with profound shock and sadness that I learn of the passing of Adam
Honigman. There is so much I'd like to say about Adam but the words are not
yet there as my chagrin is blurring my thoughts.
I met Adam at a memorial for another dear garden friend, Francoise Cachelin,
a few years ago and I was so taken by what he said that day, that I
immediately emailed him back that evening and we've been friends ever since.
To say that he was strongly opinionated would be an understatement, but
that's what you need sometimes to get things done. He has given advice to
countless number of gardeners on how to fight the good fight to protect our
gardens, and that's no small feat.
To add to his cv below, he was also a board member of the New York City
Community Gardens Coalition a couple years ago - until other
responsibilities obliged him to resign and he was greatly missed, for his
energy and knowledge of all the issues was incredible.
I've always enjoyed his company, his many stories (for through his
experiences, he had many to tell) and his communal work at large around New
York. I will miss him dearly. If anyone has any information regarding a
funeral service, memorial or other events in his memory I would be grateful
to know about it. I send my condolences to his family and all his loved ones
who are in great need of comfort and support today and the many days to
come.
peace,
Magali

oy. i have noticed that when you get an unexpected email titled only with someone's name, it is almost always bad news.
i met adam once but have enjoyed his posts here on the list so many times. i'm proud to have helped sweep during an open-garden event at the clinton community garden last fall. i showed up to tour the garden; then asked if i could help with anything that needed doing; and adam put a broom in my hand.
if he is gone, new york has lost a true new yorker, full of stories, opinions, historical memories, and amazing information.

Hi, Folks!
I hope someone in NYC is printing out all these tributes to Adam and will
give them to his son, Daniel. It has to be terribly hard to lose both of
your parents (especially when they were such wonderful people) in 5 years
and the prayers of our church are with Daniel at this time.
If the family sets up some type of memorial to Adam, please post it here so
that those of us who live outside of NYC can contribute.
I also hope ACGA sets up some type of memorial fund in Adam's memory -- I
can't think straight right now about what it should be, but something
important should be done because Adam was a source of great support for
those of us who tried to persevere in our dream of community gardening in an
often-hostile "community gardens are a temporary use until someone with
money put buildings on that land" world.
His two laws of community gardening "Community Gardening is 50% gardening
and 100% politics" and "Land Use is A Blood Sport" should be prominently
displaced on the ACGA website -- forget those two laws and if you don't yet
hold title or long-term lease to your community garden's land -- you WILL
lose your community garden.
That all said, I just took Adam's e-mail address off my Garden Update e-mail
list and I can't stop crying. Most of the time, we just supported each
other on the list as the "pain-in-the-ass" New Yorker and the
"attytood"-filled Philadelphian.
However, in 2002 when the Food Network asked me to come to NYC as the
"garlic expert" for the garlic episode of "Follow That Food" Adam and
Allegra couldn't have been more gracious in giving my then-fianc? and I
directions on how to get to the Food Network's taping restaurant, going out
to eat afterwards, showing us NYC and making sure we got to our train.
Adam's graciousness in person and love of the city convinced us to make our
honeymoon at ACGA's NYC conference later that year and we had a wonderful
time with Adam, with the city and with fellow community gardeners.
Throughout his depression, I would e-mail him to remind him that St. John's
United Church of Christ Organic Community Garden WOULD NOT exist at this
time without his support and advice since 2005 when everything went very,
very wrong. (Currently, Housing Authority of Chester County personnel are
tracking my public e-mails -- especially on this list -- so that they can
sue the church for my comments!) No matter how nasty and underhanded things
got, Adam had seen it before and provided helpful political advice that has
keep this community garden going. I, personally, and the community garden
as an entity, could not have come this far -- and have the stomach to
continue -- without him.
Guess I'm the only acid-tongued person left on this list! :'( I miss Adam
terribly and the current fight to save St. John's United Church of Christ
Organic Community Garden will be so much harder without his support.
May God bless his family and may he and Allegra find peace with each other
and with God.
