Every gardener should see Ruth Stouts video,
http://www.gardenworks.cc/2.html.  and follow her method of organic, no-till
gardening.   It reduces labor time greatly, increases yields and the soil is
richer each year.  Use in permanent beds.  20% of the land will be in
permanent paths saving seed, irrigation, labor, etc but yields will be
higher.  Read her books.  She died in 1990.  This was filmed where she was
92.  During the 25 years she gardened, 7,000 people visited her garden.
