Hello CSGN LA-
I have great news! Last night, the LAUSD school board unanimously approved a
motion to "Preserve and Sustain School Gardens" (something that the CSGN LA
group has been working on for about a year). This is a monumental event, as
no school board that we know of in California has ever passed such a measure
- it will set an example to the rest of the state.
The motion, originally created by Marianne Brown and Mud Baron, was
co-written and endorsed by school board members Canter, Korenstein and
Galatzan.
Last night, myself, Raul Gonzalez, Mud Baron, Marianne Brown, Diane Pollock,
Theresa Dahl, Theresa Franklin, Dwayne Sherman and Joyce Lapinsky spoke in
favor of the measure at the school board meeting and were very well
received. Thanks to all of you for your support.
The entire board were full of smiles and very proud to pass the measure (and
very much appreciated all the school garden produce and flowers that were
brought to them by our representatives!). This was a momentous event, and
many flashing cameras were present!
The motion is attached. It contains resolutions for nutrition education and
tasting and sampling of garden produce, community involvement, garden-based
instructional integration and much more.
This is a huge "foot in the door" for future school garden support and
funding.
