[Community_garden] Raised beds & Freecycle

I just discovered Freecycle and it's wonderful! The website is www.freecycle.org and everything on it is free. You post an OFFERERED ad and someone contacts you, usually by email to pick it up. By the same token, you can place a WANTED ad for something and get that too usually.

Over the last two days I received 200 packets of hotel type coffee. As program director for our community center, I'm always hunting for food for our food bank, so getting this much coffee was a ganga deal.

Then I asked for some red brick to make the beds and scored an entire patio. Course I have to go pick it up (read dig it up & transport), but heck, certainly cheaper than buying other materials. And it's all free!

To sign up, go to the website and search for a freecycle in your area. When you apply to be a member, they will send you an email to respond to as well as some rules of participation. Read this last one carefully as they give you a "test" afterwards, by asking you to name the listserv moderators. You then send an email back, answering the questions appropriately, and you're in. Interesting bunch of people to meet too.

  Happy Freecycling!
