[Community_garden] Collecting rain from roofs for vegetable production

Does anyone have research into the safety of collecting rain from the  
roofs of buildings to be used for vegetables?  I've seen countless  
community gardens in from Brooklyn to LA that are doing this, but I've  
been told by some that this is dangerous and unsafe.  Is there  
research out there that people can share, both about the toxicity of  
the water and then the toxicity of the vegetables?
