[Community_garden] UU/church cgs

Regarding the Unitarian Universalist Green Sanctuary Program, yes, a
community garden would fit in very well with it. Some of the suburban
congregations have land that they should be able to offer. Be sure to check
with any religious organization about their plans for expansion (new Parish
halls and religious education buildings). Try to get a 10 year lease and
incorporate your work into their social justice/environmental program. You
can find out more about the Green Sanctuary Program at the UU Ministry for
Earth at http://uuministryforearth.org/grs_overview.htm

Here in Portland, Oregon our municipal Community Gardens Program has gardens
on land owned by the Catholic Archdiocese and a Methodist Church, but most
of the sites are on that land is public property. We have been at the two
Church properties for about 20 years.

Hi, Don!

The Unitarians haven't found us, although if they want to help, I'll all for
it. We've had some nibbles from other churches -- ie, they want advice,
etc, but no one has returned my e-mails or phone calls lately.

For our community garden project, things are going great with the church,
the local non-profits and the Borough -- it's the Housing Authority of
Chester County (Board meeting on 2/26 where they are supposed to publicly
discuss/vote on our lease even though the Borough asked them to extend our
lease and submit a building plan that fits the local zoning and that can't
be done until this summer) where things get "interesting."

Does anyone on this list work with a community garden/community
ecology/urban ag project co-sponsored by a Unitarian-Universalist church
(possibly through their "Green Sanctuary" program), or any church/community
of faith sponsored community garden project? Just curious to find examples
and see how it is working. Doreen?
