Dorene, those are great suggestions. I lead a church garden here in central Ohio and we have five agencies we send fresh produce to: 3 food banks, a daycare for their 30 Title XX families (working families who qualify for assistance) and a church sponsored free store. The patrons of the free store are all folks who have been directed there by local social services programs - again - families on assistance - no one else is served there. All of these agencies serve a large immigrant population so we grow a lot of ethnic foods you normally wouldn't see grown in my area of the country.

We pick on Tuesdays and Thursdays for these organizations and pick early on Saturday mornings for produce to sell at a vegetable stand to raise money for our garden needs. We sell by donation only.

We're unique in our area in that 1/2 of our garden is gardened by families in need who then donate at least 10% of their produce to the agencies and the other 1/2 is gardened solely by volunteers and people who need to do community service who send about 75% of that produce to the agencies.

We like helping our own neighborhood.
