Don - I coordinate the Hope Community Garden on property owned by Federated
Church (1/2 Presbyterian and 1/2 Methodist) in the foothills of Northern
California. We are going into our 3rd season and will be adding beds for
the local Indian Education Program and hopefully developing a children's
garden area. We also have a raised bed for the students at the Center for
the Visually Impaired, which rents a house on the same property and two beds
devoted to the Plant a Row for the Hungry project.
The church has been very supportive of our efforts. We are covered by the
Federated Church insurance and grateful to have a bathroom, storage sheds
and a garage on the property. Gardeners pay $40.00 per year for a bed that
is 8' x 24'. We keep the cost affordable by sponsoring a farmers' market at
church on Sundays in the summer. Church members and gardeners donate their
extra produce and people take what they want, making a donation that helps
fund the garden and our local food closet.
Let me know if you want more information.
