  Church Garden in Brooklyn, NY

I was glad to see the mention of church related gardens. I have been
interested in this subject for a long time as my introduction to
community
garden was through the Park Slope United Methodist Schaef Earth Garden in
Brooklyn NY. This garden has a team of folks who work together to
maintain
the garden since its inception in the late 70's. We have had a compost
area
since 1984 (to which church members bring their weekly "offerings"),
native
plantings, and other "green related" attributes. The community at large
uses the garden for events, parties, etc and it is used daily by a
nursery
school "Beansprouts". You can find some photos on the church website at:
www.parkslopeumc.org :about us/garden or check out photos also. It is
strictly and ornamental garden; we do not grow any food crops, except for
   one very prolific grape vine.
I know there are many other garden sites that are church/religious
related
including the gardens where Don Boeklehide is a participant which is
part
of urban ministries in Charlotte, NC. I also know that Centenary United
Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC sponsors a food growing garden
where
its members grow food for the local second harvest organization.
If anyone is interested in our garden in Brooklyn, NY let me know. We
have
a blog that might be helpful. It has lots of history and activities. I
am
also interested in other such gardens.
