Also, talk to Jason O'Brien moby_lize at yahoo.ca in Vancouver about MOBY (My
Own Back Yard) program http://www.myownbackyard.ca/
Nice YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJypFEA33lU

Bill Dawson bdawson at fpconservatory.org at the Franklin Park Conservatory's
Growing to Green Program in Columbus, OH does some of the same
http://www.fpconservatory.org/growingtogreen.htm

>From my experience, the key is to be sure that it is the community (not your
program) that wants and is creating the gardens. Gardens created by others
for someone tend not to be sustainable.

ACGA's Growing Communities Curriculum has lots of very useful information
about organizing and developing community leadership.

Subject: [Community_garden] Urban Community Garden.

We are just beginning an Urban Garden Project in Spokane. It is in a poor
but unique neighborhood near downtown Spokane. We are "a scattered site"
community garden--using yard space from private property owners and
churchyards. We plan to clean up and throw seed into vacant lots, encourage
people to garden in their yards and develop gardens at these different
"scattered" locations in the neighborhood. We will find caring people who
will garden a spot at one of our sites and who be willing to nurture a young
person or two. This spring we hope to be ready to hire 4-6 youth out of
drug court--and to have a summer garden camp. We plan to develop small
roadside stands in the neighborhood to sell some of the produce that the
gardeners donate, and or, a central Market in the neighborhood. We are just
starting out but with a lot of community support.
Does anyone you know have a community garden project that is similar that we
might learn from? We are in contact with Boise, Missoula and Olympia.
