Don,
You got it right. I do believe that land never needs a "rest" if it is
properly managed using organic, no-till. More oganic matter should be added
each year than is taken out. That is not difficult to do. Read Ruth
Stout's little books. She gardened the same plot for 25 years.
I visited a farmer in Malawi who has done that for over 30 years. I asked
him if his yields were still going up and he said yes but only a little bit
each year. The soil was brown except in the beds and they were as black as
the night. What was interesting is that he has asked the American there
that set up the workshops, to bring me to his farm to give him advice. I
toured his little farm and we went in the house to have a coke and he asked
me to tell him. I said I do not have any advice for you as you are doing
what I teach.
