JOB DESCRIPTION FOR DULUTH COMMUNITY GARDEN PROGRAM’s 
PROGRAM COORDINATOR

The Duluth Community Garden Program is a nonprofit organization founded in
1981. The mission of the program is to strengthen the Duluth area
community and foster self-sufficiency by providing access for all to food
production and preservation resources and promote sustainable gardening
practices. The DCGP includes Plant-a-Lot Community Gardens, the Cannery,
and Kids Gardening. For more information go to

Program Coordinator

Job function: Program management

Position Description:
Organize and coordinate the Plant-A-Lot community gardens as the staff
person assigned to that program and carry out land- and garden-related
policies as set by the board of directors.  

Visit each garden site on a regular basis to monitor gardeners’ progress,
needs, and site issues.

Develop activities and related timelines to meet established program goals
and to address identified needs and issues.  

Review and revise gardener contract annually and implement plot assignment
process.

Coordinate Kids’ Gardening programming by maintaining gardens in arable
condition, planning for and scheduling in-garden sessions with Kids’ Café,
Girl Power, and/or other programs served, and by developing other kids’
and/or family gardening education programs/opportunities.

Report all program expenses, evaluate program results, and prepare related
reports for management.  

Serve as staff liaison to land stewardship committee.

With land stewardship committee, prepare matrix for garden stewardship and
oversee implementation of matrix tasks.

Assist land committee in coordinating work days at garden sites.

Organize and staff committee to plan and implement the annual seed sale.

In conjunction with other staff, board members, and volunteers, develop
curriculum and teach garden-related education programs/courses.

When possible, locate and develop new garden sites and develop
garden-related services/programs in and for low-income neighborhoods.

Reports to:
Executive director

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree plus program coordination and organic gardening equal to
three years’ experience. Experience working with children.
Canning/Food Preservation experience desirable. 

Hours: 10-20 hours per week. Approximately 500 hours a year, varying
seasonally.

Salary range:
$13 - $15/hour
