At the Holzka Garden on Staten Island we have a very big Thornless Honey
Locust which gives us a lot of shade. We have 2 picnic benches and other
benches under it. There are a few plots that get mostly shade, so they
have shade lovers like violets in them, and noone has them as their own
plots. We love this tree. This, of course, is a long term solution for
shade. A big grape pergola wouldn't take as long. Having native trees
and fruit bearing shrubs on the periphery is good, too. Cathy
